FAQs

(We get asked these questions a lot!)

How long do the trees take to grow?

Once the trees have become sturdy saplings, they grow about a foot per year. A 6ft tree would have been growing in our field for about 8 years.

Do they grow from seeds?

We buy small plants (about 9 inches tall) grown from seed in either Sweden or Cumbria. We then plant them sometime between September and January.

How many trees do you sell?

We have about 50,000 trees on the farm, we plant around 5,000 a year and probably sell just under that amount.

What do you do the rest of the year?

We have lots to do and spend about six months of the year working in the trees. They have to be pruned up to three times a year. We have to attach canes up the trunk of the Nordmans to stop birds landing on the leader and snapping them off. We then have to take them all off again once the leaders have hardened! We have to cut the grass, check for aphids and other pests and fertilize when needed. We also have to try and shape the trees when they are nice and soft in the summer.

When we aren’t tending to the trees, we are busy growing other things such as sunflowers and pumpkins!

Do you just cut down all the trees you don’t sell after Christmas?

No – they are just like a tree you would plant in your garden, they take years of nurturing to grow.
